Bian Lian

BianLian digitally reimagines traditional performing arts as a playful interactive installation, delivering an immersive, real-time performance experience through multimedia devices.

Design

BianLian is an interactive installation that simulates the traditional Chinese Sichuan Opera art of face-changing (川剧变脸). Using real-time facial and body motion capture with dynamic rendering, the system transforms users' expressions into multi-variable faces projected onto a physical mask. Simultaneously, users can trigger traditional instrument sounds through body gestures.

Goal

The project aims to create a portable, highly immersive experience for traditional performing arts—promoting cultural accessibility while exploring the feasibility of digitized performance.

BianLian was featured in Digital Media Year in Review (2020) and exhibited at Gales Gallery.
