SoundScape

Unlike visual media such as text, video, and images, sound carries a uniquely emotional quality. Audio data serves both narrative and affective functions—it reflects the user's emotional state and their relationship to the subject being described. This makes audio an ideal format for capturing emotion-laden information.

Rather than storing audio in conventional digital formats, SoundScape converts the thoughts and emotions expressed in a moment into tangible, collectible objects. By transforming sound into physical form, we aim to create artifacts that evoke past thoughts, emotions, and experiences with greater vividness and clarity.

Implementation

SoundScape is an interactive installation that captures and analyzes audio in real time, dynamically generating 3D models that embody the qualities of sound. Users can view a digital model of their recorded audio through the SoundScape interface and 3D print it on site.

Platform Architecture

Unlike digital audio-sharing experiences such as Blast Theory's GIFT, SoundScape offers an emotionally expressive interaction design—sharing ideas and feelings through physicalized sound.

SoundScape is exhibiting at the "EMERGENCE: THE DIGITAL MEDIA END OF YEAR SHOW" at the Toronto Media Arts Centre in 2019.
